This is the kind of thing one doesn't want to read in the forecast:

Cloudy. Snow in the morning. Areas of blowing snow in the morning. Additional light snow accumulation. Highs around 9 above. North winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Chance of snow 80 percent. Wind chill values as low as 27 below.

But there it is. The party I was to attend Friday night has been canceled becuase it is inland, 35 miles west, and the forecast there is even worse.

It is Maine. It is what it is.

I have neglected "work"...that is to say, writing....in recent weeks, first because of movie stuff, then travel, then Christmas. But now I am going to be housebound because of the weather for a few days, at least, and I am planing to revisit the manuscript in progress that has been unopened in too long. Usually when I have neglected work in progress for a while, it turns out to be a good thing; my subconscious, it seems, has been at work on it and maybe my conscious brain needed the break. So I am hoping that is true this time.

I am also hoping my power doesn't go off.

And I am hoping that the wintery stuff subsides later in January so that I can make a couple of planned trips...one to southern California! Warmth! Yay!

But for now: Hot tea. Fireplace. Manuscript. Purring cat. And...oh yes, music!  I'll put on some music.

Stay warm, everyone.  Happy 2014.

Well, you nailed it in two sentences, "It is Maine. It is what it is." I believe I am just a little north of you in northern York County on the coast. This has been a test of the spirit so far. I hope it improves.

That painting above your fireplace should keep you motivated come what may. Here's hoping the Manuscript Muses are raring to go.

A Happy New Year to You Lois, with hopes of many more wonderful books to come, and I am on the edge of my seat waiting for The Giver!

At this time of the year, I am never quite certain what the weather will be except that it will be cold - some days colder than others, some even close to mild. Regardless it is winter and it's the price we pay for an amazing spring.. We've had two cold weather days away from school and even when it is -15 with a windchill to make it feel like -40, it beats sameness. Hands down. I am glad you've had a break. I find when I take a break, I come back stronger and refreshed. Happy New Year 2014

I am a middle school English teacher ... each year we read The Giver. And, every year I have students write "Chapter 24" as an end of the book assignment. As you can imagine, I have about half who pick "they live" and half who pick "they survive;" however, this year, I had something entirely different. One of my 8th grade girls who is extremely talented wrote a masterpiece. Of all my years of teaching, I have not ever had a student write something of this magnitude and brilliance in response to the assignment - "Write Chapter 24." I know this is a LONG shot, but I would LOVE to send you a copy of her work. I think you would find it as amazing as I did ...

I hope I don't sound like a star struck teen but I was so excited when I came across your author profile on Goodreads. Growing up I'd get lost in books as often as I could. You're books where some of my favorites! The giver was the first book that really started to open my mind and I remember reading it so many times the binding split in half. Eventually I started writing myself as a teenager and I still write almost every day. You inspired me at such a young age to think deeper and ask more questions and at times your books gave me an escape when I needed it the most. I guess I just wanted to tell you how much I loved and still love your writing.

I e-mailed you a few years back and asked if you had ever considered making the trilogy into movies. You told me that
the manuscripts had been in Hollywood for some time but nothing had developed. And then, I heard the news! Lois, so very
excited that they are making a movie of The Giver! And eventually, who knows, the remaining books in the quartet!
CONGRATULATIONS! Hollywood finally woke up! Looks like 2014 is going to be a wonderful year! I am elated!

First Jewelry Made From Rare Iridium Metal

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ Los Angeles based rare Nike Lunar Womens metals manufacturer, American Elements, announced today that it has patented and begun production of the first ever jewelry made from pure Iridium metal.

Iridium is an extremely rare precious metal with a more luxurious patina than gold, silver or platinum. It has never before been used in jewelry due to its extremely high melting temperature which is more than 2,000 degrees above that of gold.

"The response has been fantastic," reports American Elements CEO Michael N. Silver. "The introduction of Nike Zoom Hyperev a new precious metal to the global jewelry industry is an important and exciting once in a lifetime event. Even prior to the product launch, the word got out. Among the first buyers is a Rothschild banker in London for his wedding band and Nike Lunar Mens a well known California female artist."

Because of its extremely high melting point, traditional jewelers lack the technology and equipment to produce iridium jewelry. American Elements' high technology capabilities, which it uses to design parts for the NASA space program, allowed it to work with jewelers in New York and Los Angeles to create the first pure Iridium wedding band which it patented last month, along with bracelets, earrings, watch bands and necklaces produced from the rare metal.

Iridium is a deep gray highly reflective metal that is the highest luster, lowest tarnishing element in the universe making it perhaps the most precious of all metals. "There is no doubt that if it had a significantly lower melting point, Iridium would have been the preferred precious metal of royalty and the wealthy for the past 1,000 years. It's absolutely beautiful, but the technology to produce it just wasn't available," says Mr. Silver.

Bleach stained bathroom towels, tomato sauce splattered dish towels, worn, pilled bed sheets they all need to go.

Why: Worn out linens don't feel or look good.

Why shouldn't you wrap yourself in a fresh, fluffy towel after a shower or feel excited to climb into a bed of soft sheets?

How: I go through my linens once a year to see what needs replacing or repairing and which items will find a second life as a dust rag.

Oatmeal Bath for Itchy Skin

When you have itchy skin, you want to stop the itch as soon as possible. Sometimes, though, you have no anti itch medications around, and you can get to a pharmacy. A home remedy is likely in your kitchen, though. This grain serves as both human food and animal feed. It is an annual grass and has been used in folk medicine for conditions such as insomnia, paralysis and rheumatism. The fats are lubricants, which help dry skin. The website Real Age notes Nike Zoom KD 7 VII Big Kids Shoes the polysaccharides basically complex sugars in the oats leave a residue in bathwater and on your skin, also combating Air Jordan 1 dryness. Oatmeal proteins work to protect your skin in general. Itching can occur for a number of reasons, some of which require prescription medication to solve. For example, Air Jordan Kids ringworm, a common name for Tinea capititis and corporis, is a fungus that causes intense itching for which you need an anti fungal medication. Oats on the skin shouldn be a problem, but avoid getting the oat water in or near your mouth. Speak with your doctor for a final verdict regarding oatmeal baths if you have celiac disease.
