Am I allowed to say "I've been busy"? Is that an excuse?  It's true, in any case; and I have neglected posting to the blog lately.

Some of the "busy" has included spending a weekend in Broklyn, where I was given the "Best of Brooklyn" award, given each year to an author wihth a connection to that city...ah, excuse me, borough.

I lived in a Broklyn as a very young child, when my father was trnsferred fomr there after being in Hawaii, where I was born, for several years. We were in Brooklyn on Sunday, December 7, 1941, and that is one of my very early memories. I was four. My father was outside, about to get into the car. My mother heard the news on the radio. She began to cry. Honolulu was our home until so recently. I ran outside and told Daddy to come in; Mama was crying. I have a memory that she told him he must put his unofprm on. (He was a US Army majpr then; but it was a Sunday; he was wearing civilian clothes.) I have always wondered if it was announced on the radio that military personnel should be in uniform. I couldn't have made up that memory...it is so specific.

But always there are questions you don't ask your parents in time, and then they are gone, and you wonder forever.

My father had to go off to the war, and Mother took us (my sister and me) to Pennsylvania, where her parents lived. Later, when the war ended, we would go to live in Tokyo.

But when I was almost fifteen we moved again to NYC. We lived on Governors Island...the greatest piece of real estate in the world..but every day I took a boat to Manhattan, then the subway to Brooklyn Heights, where I went to high school.

So I had a legitimate Brooklyn history, and it was an honor to receive the award, and a treat to be back there at their marvelous Book Festival.  Here are the crowds in front of Borough Hall...this is two blocks from my old school, Packer Collegiate Institute.

I hope you are well and happy - you should be still celebrating the Red Sox's win in the Series! We read The Giver this year, but at the beginning rather than the end. Some of the clever symbolism and higher level thinking was gone - because beginning of the year 7th graders aren't ready for that type of thinking, yet. But, they got the BIG Message that everyone needs to be looking out for each other - that a BIG community can't have ALL the power over the individuals. Congratulations on your award, your travels and memories have made you whom you are. I hope you are passing these memories on to your children and grandchildren, when you can.

Hi Lois,
Looks like you have moved to Maine. I tried your old phone number, which of course didn't work! Would love to catch up with you.
Big favor: My daughter-in-law Kathi met a young person (homeschooled) who said that Counting the Stars changed her life. She had to move to D.C. from Alaska much to her dismay and was very despondent. Reading that book was somehow transformative for her! Kathi wants to send her a copy and wondered if she sent it to you first if you would autograph it. I know this is a lot of trouble. Just say no if you can't do it!
Bob and I are fine, still perking, teaching for Road Scholar courses and he does Bible studies that are amazing.
Seven grandchildren are moving up and out: 2 engaged (1 after law school; Bob says too many lawyers), one teaching English in Memphis, the rest still in college.
Love, Phoebe

Dear Lois Lowry
When our teacher gave us Gathring Blue we thaught it was going to be boring, but our teacher kept saying it was going to be an amazing book. As we read on we started to get really engrossed in the book because there was lots of mistery. By the end we had a c qouple of uestions:
What was the Ruin?
Will you write another series?
