Photographers always love the early morning (and early evening) hours because of the light. You can see that here, taken this morning of my granddaughter at 6:30 AM.

We head home tomorrow...at least to MY home, in Massachusetts; then my German family heads back to Germany a few days later (after hitting the Mall one more time!)

A little more about writing a series (since I have been thinking about this topic, while starting on a  new series book)...it is important that the characters, who are familiar by now to the reader --- and the writer --- grow and change. Of course this varies according to the amount of time passing. The Gooney Bird books began in October and have gone month by month through a year of second grade. People don't change hugely month to month, though second graders of course are maturing and learning at a rapid pace. Felicia Ann was lisping because of missing front teeth in the early books; now her new teeth have grown in. Malcolm was having trouble adjusting to baby triplets in his family....he's a little more sanguine about them now. These are not major changes, of course,

But earlier in my writing life, i did a series of nine books about Anastasia Krupnik. She was 10, in fourth grade, in the first book; as the series progressed she became older; I think she was in eighth grade at the end. So there were many more changes to deal with.

My new book, not yet published, SON, begins at the same time as the first in the quartet..THE GIVER. But from there it follows the characters for probably 15-16 years. That was quite an undertaking. Jonas is married and has small children, now. Gabriel is a teenager.

Fictional characters begins to seem very real to the author. You worry about them. You rejoice for them. Sometimes you must mourn their loss.

Beautiful Picture!

Ms. Lowry,

I am doing an assignment for my Library Science class and would like to use some pictures from your blog. This assignment is a power point that requires pictures of favorite YA author. The power point will only be shown to the teacher. I could not find an email address to ask for this permission. May I please use a couple of your pictures?

Thank You,

Hello, I am inquiring if Lois Lowry would be interested in autographing a fabric piece for my authors quilt. If so where or to whom would I mail the fabric package to? Thank you for sharing your gift of writing. Both of my daughters are teachers and have their students reading your book The Giver. They passed the book on to mom and I have enjoyed it also.

Ms. Lowry,

I'm sure you get a million and a half of these types of emails a day but hey, who doesn't like to be complimented?

Hi there! My name is Josh and I am currently an Elementary Education major in Oklahoma. In one of my classes, we were given an assignment to choose an author, and research them and present what we learned to the class. I selected you because your books are some of the most memorable and enjoyable books from my childhood. But to be honest, the project was something I dreaded, until I found this website. I have greatly enjoyed learning more and more about your life and simply realizing that you are more than a wonderful author; you are a real person. Thank you for sharing so much about yourself!

I better wrap this up! I just wanted to write to you and say thank you for all of the wonderful pieces of work that you have written. I also had one question/ request. Do you have any advice, suggestions, or even a little-known fact about yourself that you would like to share with a classroom of future educators? I would love to get the opportunity to share any advice to my classmates. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and possibly respond!

Sincerely,
Josh Silver
